With your newly minted degree, you have been hired as the patient safety officer for a 54-bed acute-care facility. One of your position responsibilities is to serve as chair of the Patient Safety Committee (PSC). This committee helps set and endorse safety policies and oversees dissemination of said policies in the healthcare facility. The PSC also reports to the Medical Executive Committee and the board of trustees on a monthly basis. The chief nursing officer (CNO) approaches you with a concern that the clinical departments she supervises (including nursing and other related departments such as laboratory and radiology) are lagging in their involvement with safety initiatives and solicits your help.Â
Discuss how you would assess the culture of safety demonstrated in the case. What questions would you ask? What kinds of information would you seek? Consider one evidence-based strategy you might use to increase team cooperation with patient safety initiatives in the facility.
