A patient’s culture, age, race, etc can affect their perception of health and illness and their beliefs about the causes of their diseases and ultimately treatment compliance. The examiner should take into consideration the patient’s background to individualize their treatment plan and promote the patients willingness to comply. A patient might not see the value in certain symptoms or information on treatments attempted due to their cultural practices. By showing respect to the patient’s background and preferences, the nurse/ examiner can establish rapport and increase patient’s comfort and cooperation.Â
