Primary prevention for the 2010 Haiti Earthquake was nonexistent in the community. Haiti, considered a third world country, lacked the resources to engage in any type of primary prevention interventions related to disaster management. Even prior to the earthquake, medical care was provided by Christian organizations who set up clinics and brought resources to provide medical care to the residents of Haiti. Environmental conditions are unsanitary, and the residents struggle to meet their basic needs. Primary prevention interventions to prevent significant injuries and loss of life include up-to-date construction of buildings that are resistant to earthquakes, which did not exist in Haiti. An intervention specific to nursing that would have made all the difference is infection control by improving unsanitary conditions. The phase of disaster this intervention would fall under preparedness. Due to the lack of disaster prevention interventions, other countries had to intervene by ensuring preparation (specifically resources such as health care workers, medications, equipment etc) to assist Haiti.Â
Sending health care workers that could assist in the treatment of individuals affected by the earthquake, such as medication administration, first aid, triage, and surgical interventions would be considered secondary prevention. Secondary prevention is focused on supporting the victims by providing safety, saving lives and improving health (Falkner, 2018). Nurses can provide secondary prevention in many ways, such as those listed above in addition to emotional support for the individuals who are suffering from loss of family and friends. Secondary prevention interventions can be improved in Haiti by assisting with educating the community in health care, even something as simple as infection control and first aid, and by setting up a safe environment to provide this care. These interventions would be considered the response phase of a disaster.Â
