Why do social movements often make use of disruptive behaviors?  

Do disruptive behaviors: 

raise awareness of critical issues; 
challenge corruption 
enjoy the protection of the First Amendment
apply pressure on local officials/government; and/or what else?

Possible negative consequences/constraints associated with the use of disruptive behaviors might include that:

people can be injured or even killed;
they often involve violence, riots, and the like;
people are turned off/away from the movement’s cause;
the focus becomes the tactics rather than the cause itself;
lost jobs;
a negative impact on the economy; 
and/orwhat else?

Disruptive behaviors (which are not all violent … peaceful protests can be disruptive) include:

protest marches;

riots;

looting;

he destruction of property; and/orwhat else?
