DISCUSSION REPONSE FOR , Initial Post: Introduction Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by uncontrollable worrying and is considered a chronic condition (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). Individuals with GAD usually have another psychiatric disorder such as depression (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). The somatic manifestation of GAD is tachycardia, palpitations, hyperactivity, trembling, restlessness, and muscle tension (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). There are pharmacological options as well as non-pharmacological options for the treatment of GAD such as cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation training, biofeedback, and supportive therapy (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). Anxiolytic Medications for the Treatment of Anxiety Benzodiazepines are a common drug of choice for the treatment of GAD, but the first-line drug choice for the treatment of GAD are serotonergic reuptake inhibitors (SRI’s) which can include both serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as escitalopram (Melarago, 2021). SRIs “increase serotonergic transmission through the selective blockade of presynaptic serotonin (5-HT) transporters” which normally transport serotonin back into the neuron for recycling, this causes a general increase in 5-HT neurotransmission (Melarago, 2021). This process leads to changes thought to play a role in treating depression and anxiety (Melarago, 2021). An approved SSRI that can be used to
