The article I chose, first focuses on the factors that are responsible for decreasing the quality of work life in nursing like staff shortages, less pay, the constant pressure to provide more services with reduced sources, workload, etc. It then discusses that in order to increase the quality of work life in nursing, these problems need to be fixed which can also help in improving the productivity in healthcare facilities. So, for doing this they are recommending the use of the idea of STS theory (socio-technical systems) which is a method of designing that emphasizes the interdependence of people, technology, and the environment so as to boost task productivity as well as the sense of fulfillment of nurses. For instance, healthcare organizations utilizing an STS approach to lower nursing staff turnover at the unit level may collect employee feedback in order for nurse supervisors to improve their abilities to keep staff on their units (Brooks & Anderson, 2005, p. 320). Various other recommendations are made in the article like the nurse leaders can make and implement benefit plans for employees that would enhance nurses’ working conditions such as the ones that help nurses manage work and family obligations, reduce rotating shifts, offer bonuses for off-shift employment, etc. and hence improving the quality of work life in nursing. The work and research did suggest that this theory is important for nursing practice and hence contributes to the beneficence of the healthcare facility. Taking into account the findings following the discussion and the various suggestions in the article, I strongly agree that it is a good approach as with this method of designing which organizations can formulate, the quality of work life in nursing can be increased by fulfilling the needs of the employees while also meeting organizational goals like proper care providence to patients, increased productivity, etc. (Brooks & Anderson, 2005, pp. 325-327).
