Scope Creep A project team is in the process of implementing bar scanning for medication administration. Someone on the team suggests that scanning be expanded to include breast milk for newborns in the neonatal intensive-care unit. The original scope was to implement bar code scanning for medications only. By adding this to the project plan, many additional tasks need to be completed to ensure the breast milk has a bar code placed on the bottle (workflow), the scanner can read the bar code (process), new tasks need to be built in the EHR (build), and the nurse is able to document the administration on the electronic medication-administration record (process). Although this may not seem like a lot of additional work, every addition distracts the project team from the original project plan and scope. How should this be discussed with the project team? List the pros/cons.Â
