A nurse in a clinic is accountable for ongoing assessments of pain management. One of the long-term clients, Ana, has required increasing amounts of narcotics for her pain management over the last year. The nurse has known for more than a year that Ana’s husband, Victor, has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig disease. Victor’s disease adds a great deal of stress to both their lives, which has had a negative effect on Ana’s physical health. The nurse assesses the emotional toll of Victor’s illness as part of Ana’s pain assessment. During one of these discussions, Ana asks the nurse how much of her narcotic medication her husband would need to take to end his life.
