I work as a server at a local restaurant, and many servers there have experienced some prejudice from customers. One of the regular customers that come in is a white male. He does not like to have female servers wait on him. In the past, he has told female servers women that “they belong in the kitchen.” I’ve never had the opportunity to serve this man directly, but I’ve had several interactions with him and always attempt to be as kind as possible. Despite these attempts at pleasantry, he will never sit at my table and allow me to serve him. Still, I make it a point to say hi to him every time he comes in. I’ve learned from these situations that I must stand up for myself. However, I will still try to be kind to all customers with prejudices in hopes that it makes them second guess their actions towards me.Â
I’m Hispanic, and whenever I meet other Hispanic people, they automatically try to speak to me in Spanish. I don’t speak Spanish; it was never spoken in my household. Many Hispanic people give me a hard time for it or treat me differently when they find out I don’t speak Spanish. This frustrates me and has affected how I treat people in the past. One day we had a new Hispanic employee in the restaurant, and I used to avoid them because I was afraid they would act similarly to the way others did in the past. This employee tried speaking Spanish to me, but I learned it was only because they didn’t know much English. Once I got to know her more, she was very nice. She helps me with Spanish, and I help her with English. This employee has a tough time communicating with people, but she now comes to me whenever she needs help. If I never gave her a chance, she would not have approached me or been able to come to ask me questions. I learned not to let how people treat me negatively affect how I treat others.
