Having a nursing specialty certification goes a long way. It shows a higher level of commitment of the RN’s craft. There are many levels and varieties of certifications in nursing. As discussed in the article, the Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse certification requires a registered nursing license, minimum of two years practice in a medical-surgical setting, and 2000 hours of medical-surgical practice in the past three years (Boyle & Thompson, 2020). These are requirements for the RN candidate to sit for the exam. Once the RN passes the exam they must maintain their practice in the med-surge setting and provide evidence of continued competence in their area of expertise. It is fair to say that most healthcare settings, if not require, prefer a higher level of certification. After all, most facilities today require the registered nurse to have those three important letters listed after your name, BSN! These certifications provide a higher level of knowledge and information one has in that specific area of work. “Specialty nursing certification is validation and formal recognition of nurses’ knowledge, skills, and abilities (Boyle & Thompson, 2020).”

I felt the authors did a nice job of reporting the data accumulated from the research. The three highest rated intrinsic rewards for certified nurses were an enhanced feeling of personal accomplishment, personal satisfaction, and a validation of specialized knowledge, while the three highest rated intrinsic values promoted the recognition of peers, recognition of other health professionals, and recognition from employers, as reported by Whitehead and colleagues (2019). This data supports my own personal ideology, as well as many of my peers. It was no surprise that the study showed the lowest average rating to be that certification led to an increase in salary. Many facilities may promote Magnet status or other levels of certification that their staff may have, but do not compensate them financially for those certifications.

There is no question that a well researched study utilizing reliable, solid resources is the foundation of any successful project. “A researcher can spend an inordinate amount of time searching in a broad science database when, in fact, the question is more appropriately addressed in a specialized database. Books, dissertations, websites, journals, and gray literature will yield relevant and authoritative information not included in major databases (Houser, 2023).” With the massive search possibilities that the internet has to offer, we must validate the literature we are reviewing. It is important that the information we are using is medically sound, peer reviewed, and from reputable sources. This is crucial to the foundation of any research project. After all, if it’s on the internet it MUST be right, right??
