Instructions:  In a one-page essay describe how you are going to support the dying person and their family in this scenario? 

I have been providing care for several months now to a kind, gentle man.  Before he became extremely ill, and when my physical care was complete, we would sit and have tea together.  This seemed to bring him comfort.  He often told me stories of his time in the war.  He reminisced about the love of his life, his wife of 56 years and the great joy of raising his two sons.  They live in the same city, but are very busy raising their own children so when they don’t visit, he tries to understand.  He often expressed to me as well, his deep faith and when his time came to die, he was ready to meet his God.  Then one day when I arrived, I could hear him breathing before I got to the door.  He was congested.  Moist, rattling sounds occurred with each breath in, and with each breath out.  He was asleep on his back.  He did not respond to my touch and seemed unaware of my presence.  I called for the nurse and gave a brief report:  I am with Mr. P. and his breathing is congested, but he appears comfortable.  Would you be able to come and see him now?  We turned him toward his side.  He did not respond.  His face was relaxed.  I used mouth swabs to remove some of the phlegm from his mouth.  When he was on his side, a bit more fluid drained onto the small towel I had put there.  In this position, his breathing sounded quieter.  We put pillows behind his back, washed his face, and put a fresh towel on his pillow to catch fluid.
