SCENARIO- Mr Howard, a 69 year old gentleman, is day 1 post right total knee replacement (TKR). He has patient controlled analgesia (PCA) in situ with Morphine Sulphate available 1mg every 5 minutes. He has been complaining of pain 7/10 despite the infusion.
Â
1. What pain assessment tools do you use to assess the pain in Mr. Howard, considering his old age that may influence his perception of pain?
Â
2. How is PCA prepared and managed for Mr Howard? (include pre op, during op, and post op for the answer)
Â
3. What is your scope of practice as an EN in managing PCA in accordance with nurse regulatory authority codes and guidelines? (needs also to be related back to standard under direct supervision of RN and must have competency in using PCA)
