Case Study 3
Today, you are looking after Mohammad, aged 34, who is in a coma and on life support from a recent motor vehicle accident. His doctor has said that nothing more can be done for him and two independent brain scans have returned with no brain activity. The transplant team have been to see him and his relatives regarding donating his organs but they are in conflict over whether or not to turn off his life support and offer his organs for transplantation. His mother says “No” to turning off the life support, and his father and the five siblings say “Yes” to this decision. The debate about what to do is continuous and quite loud around Mohammad’s intensive care bed, and you have to ask the family to leave the bedside and go to another room where they can talk about the impending decision. They ask if you would join them to help make a final decision.Â
