English/Communication courses are important because it is imperative to be able to communicate properly with patients and coworkers. We will have written notes that must accurately describe symptoms, treatments and care. Oftentimes, there may not to a lot of time to have lengthy talks now write out long passages, so, the communication must be clear and precise. When data is involved the nurse must be very clear as to not miss a step nor overlook anything of importance. We have to be able to understand and convey information concerning symptoms and treatments to patients as well. Sometimes patients are unable to completely describe a feeling or particular ailment and it is up to us to help decipher and work through these communication issues. It may put a patient at ease knowing we both now have a better understanding. Communication also involves the conveyance of care and sympathy. Our words must be chosen carefully to not seem dismissive, harsh, or unsympathetic. We have to be quick thinkers when communicating with patients and families to minimize fear and relay assurances that our team is capable of providing the best care possible. Sometimes, this takes more than a simple “it will be okay.” One must be able to exchange ideas and knowledge to operate in any field, but especially one that directly involves the lives of others. Â
