That “suicide is morally wrong because they have seen in it a contradiction of our nature as creatures, an unwillingness to receive life moment by moment from the hand of God without ever regarding it as simply our possession” (Meilaender, 2013) is something I can wholeheartedly agree with. Furthermore, “from Christians, each person’s life is a divine gift and trust, taken up into God’s own eternal life in Jesus, to be guarded and respected in others and in oneself,” as stated by Meilaender (2013). A person’s life does not solely belong to him or her; it also belongs to God and touches the lives of others. Consequently, no one has the right to take his or her own life or the life of another.Â
When people choose suicide or euthanasia, why do they do it? Sufferings? Suffering is an integral part of being human and can serve a greater purpose. In reality, God does not remove or eradicate suffering; rather, God shares in the burden of suffering by experiencing it firsthand (Meilaender, 2013). The great God who grants everlasting life does not choose to do away with pain. Therefore, there is no justification for a mortal to choose death over suffering or illness. Understanding the reason for our trials is essential if we are to use them for God’s glory.Â
